Screening, Brief Intervention and referral to Treatment for Alcohol and Other Drugs

Trauma centers must screen trauma patients age 12 years and older for alcohol use. Of those, who screen positive, 80% must receive a brief intervention. All members of the faculty and APP's on the Trauma Service will be trained in SBIRT. Serum ethanol and urine drug-of-abuse screen will be performed on all trauma activations (tier 1 and 2; reds and alerts). Positive chemical screens will be considered 'screen positive'. A brief intervention will be performed at the time of the tertiary survey. For those who do not undergo chemical screening, the AUDIT-C will be conducted at the time of the tertiary survey using Epic. Brief intervention will be performed for men who score >=4 and women who score >=3. See algorithms below.

Adherence to the guideline will be monitored and published as % screened and % of screen positives who undergo brief intervention.
