Most pelvic fractures do not destabilize the pelvic ring and thus do not require surgical treatment. In cases where fracture stability is uncertain, it can be helpful to load-test the pelvis by weight bearing. Standing and walking a short distance, followed by assessment with plain films, can permit the trauma team to assure stability, or identify the patient who needs surgical stabilization.
